Bone Grafting

Dental implants require the patient to have enough healthy bone structure to support them. So, if you’ve had dental trauma or advanced gum disease (periodontitis) that has caused bone loss, you might’ve been told you’re not a good candidate for dental implants.

At Castleberry Dental, Dr. C performs bone grafting procedures that restore lost bone structure, making dental implants accessible to most patients. During bone grafting, Dr. C uses biocompatible synthetic or natural bone material and places it within your natural bone structure, allowing it to integrate over time and provide support.

It typically takes three to six months for bone grafts to heal and fully integrate. Once the bone material has fully integrated with your natural bone, you can successfully support a dental implant.

What Are the Benefits of Having a Bone Graft?

Bone grafting offers patients several essential advantages.

Stops Bone Loss
Restoring your bone structure prevents further bone loss and its impact on your facial structure.
Facial Aesthetics
Bone grafting restores bone density and restores facial structure for a more youthful appearance.
Implant Accessibility
Bone grafting makes dental implants more accessible to patients who might’ve been told they weren’t candidates.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Castleberry Dental, Dr. C uses several types of bone grafting materials to help rebuild your jawbone and prepare it for dental implants or other procedures. Each material has unique benefits, and we'll recommend the best option for you.

Bone Grafting Options

Autografts use bone harvested from your own body, typically from another area of your jaw or, in some cases, from your hip or shin. Since this bone comes from you, it integrates exceptionally well and carries no risk of rejection.

Allografts are derived from human donor bone that has been carefully processed, sterilized, and tested for safety. This eliminates the need for a second surgical site while still providing excellent results.

Alloplastic grafts are synthetic materials made from biocompatible substances, such as calcium phosphate or hydroxyapatite. These lab-created options are readily available and eliminate any concern about biological transmission.

Learn More About Your Options

During your consultation at our Ellsworth office, Dr. C will discuss which bone grafting material is most suitable for your specific situation. Factors such as the size of the graft required, the location in your mouth, and your personal preferences all play a role in this decision. We're committed to helping you understand your options and feel confident in your treatment plan.

When Do We Recommend Bone Grafting?

Some of the situations in which Dr. C might recommend a bone grafting procedure are:

  • For advanced periodontal disease that has destroyed the jawbone structure
  • For tooth loss that occurred months or years ago, which has resulted in bone deterioration
  • To lift the sinus on the upper jaw to make room for and support a dental implant

Dr. C uses 3-D imaging to determine the health and density of your jawbone during your initial implant consultation. If you’re a candidate for bone grafting, he’ll thoroughly discuss your options and explain the procedure so you understand your treatment needs.

We take time to educate our patients about procedures like bone grafting so you can make informed decisions about the treatment that’s best for your smile.

Why Tooth Replacement Is Important

Besides just the aesthetics of your smile, replacing a lost tooth also restores chewing function, preserves facial structure, and protects your jawbone from deterioration.

When you lose a tooth, you also lose its root. This means that your jawbone has nothing left to support, and it begins to deteriorate. A dental implant replaces your root and helps you avoid further bone loss.

When you lose jawbone structure, it can impact facial structure and appearance, often giving you a sunken look and making you appear older than you are. Bone grafting and dental implants can restore and preserve your natural facial structure, providing a more youthful appearance for some patients.

Testimonial

Castleberry is The Best.

Dr. Castleberry promptly sorted out a major dental issue for us while he was out of town and prioritized the work we needed as soon as he got back. Common sense and common courtesy, two qualities that are seemingly harder and harder to find, and he’s got them both. Dr. Castleberry is the best!
